HHN2L: Hip Hop Into Learning
Educational Experiences
The REMIX Learning Model
HHN2L uses creative expression and mentorship to support youth development, belonging, and confidence through meaningful learning experiences.
The REMIX Learning Model
The REMIX Learning Model is a residency-based instructional approach that embeds project-based learning into core instruction. REMIX supports classrooms struggling with engagement and behavior by shifting from a single-teacher model to collaborative instructional teams. Grounded in Gholdy Muhammad’s framework and a Plan Do Study Act improvement process, REMIX increases student engagement while reducing teacher isolation and burnout.

Engagement is Where Instruction Begins
REMIX intentionally designs engagement to support culturally grounded, project-based learning that leads to academic mastery.

We Start With What Schools Already Use
We begin with the school or district’s adopted curriculum and learning targets, ensuring instruction remains aligned to standards and academic goals.
We Remix the Curriculum for Engagement
Rather than replacing curriculum, REMIX integrates relevance, youth-created media, dialogue, and collaboration to create meaningful entry points into existing lessons.
Our Engagement Leads to Mastery
Designed engagement becomes the doorway into rigorous learning, guiding students toward skill development, critical thinking, and academic mastery.
What Remixing Your Curriculum Means
-
Instruction begins with your adopted curriculum and pacing
-
Lessons align to your learning targets and standards
-
Youth-created media is used as an instructional text alongside district-adopted curriculum and core instructional materials.
-
Multiple entry points support diverse learners
-
Students produce evidence of learning aligned to mastery using PBL

The REMIX Learning Model is designed for all students, regardless of learning differences, IEP status, or ability level. Instruction creates multiple entry points so every learner can engage in rigorous learning and demonstrate mastery.
Through shared instructional teams and flexible project-based learning pathways, students work toward the same learning goals while expressing understanding in varied ways. In REMIX classrooms, inclusion is built into instructional design, facilitation, and assessment.
Inclusivity for All Learners

Culturally Grounded Project-Based Learning
In the REMIX Learning Model, project-based learning is embedded into core instruction and designed to be culturally grounded and relevant to students’ lived experiences. Projects align to academic standards while allowing students to explore identity, community, and real-world connections through rigorous work.
At JB Atkinson Elementary, we are currently the Product Development Phase where we are currently working with all 5th graders exploring theme and identity through an art- and literacy-based project. They began by designing personal masks rooted in color theory, using symbols and written reflection to represent who they are. This work will build toward a larger paper mâché mask as part of a multi-step project-based learning experience. Check back periodically to see how we continue to evolve.
Lead Texts Anchoring the Learning
ELA Alignment (Grade 5)
Project-based learning in REMIX is anchored in lead texts used alongside district-adopted curriculum. Through close reading, discussion, and writing, students deepen their understanding of theme and meaning.
Lead Texts:
-
Seeds of Change — Jen Cullerton Johnson
-
My Disguise — Yaniya Edwards, Youth Teacher Mentor
-
Feel My Pain — Harlym and Ronnie Edwards
Students analyze these texts for theme and voice, using writing to inform their project work.

This project supports fifth-grade English Language Arts standards, including:
-
Determining Theme
Students identify and explain the theme of a text and support their thinking with evidence. -
Text-Based Analysis and Writing
Students write responses that analyze how characters, experiences, or ideas contribute to the theme and message of a text. -
Discussion and Reflection
Students engage in collaborative discussions to build understanding and refine ideas before writing.

Exhibition Night: Culminating Learning Experience
Exhibition Night is the culminating experience of the REMIX project-based learning process, where students share their learning with peers, educators, and families.
Students:
-
Present project-based artifacts
-
Explain the theme and ideas behind their work
-
Share written reflections on learning and growth
This experience:
-
Demonstrates academic understanding
-
Strengthens reflection and communication
-
Honors student voice and creativity

Student Learning Outcomes
Through this project-based learning experience, students develop:
-
Deeper understanding of theme through reading, discussion, and writing
-
Stronger writing and clearer expression of thinking
-
Confidence in communicating ideas and identity
-
Problem-solving skills through multi-step project work
-
Ownership of learning through authentic artifacts used as JCPS Journey to Success evidence

Instructional Reflection & Continuous Improvement (PDSA)
The REMIX Learning Model uses Instructional Reflection and Continuous Improvement through Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycles to strengthen teaching and learning throughout the residency. Instructional teams regularly review student work, reflections, and project artifacts to assess understanding and refine instruction.
Through PDSA, our team:

Plans instruction aligned to learning targets and project goals

Reviews student work to identify growth and areas for support

Adjusts lessons and strategies in response to student needs and ensures vibrant learning is rigorous, responsive, and standards-aligned.
Meet Yaniya.
Aspiring Educator in Training
Yaniya is our first Youth Teacher Mentor and aspiring educator who co-facilitates learning in the REMIX Learning Model. As a student leader and curriculum contributor, she helps students connect texts, themes, and creative expression to academic learning targets.
She is also the author of My Disguise, a youth-created lead text used in REMIX project-based learning. Students engage directly with Yaniya as a young author, discussing her writing process and themes, which deepens understanding of text and strengthens writing skills.
In the classroom, Yaniya supports students in analyzing theme, reflecting through writing, and translating ideas into meaningful project work bridging student voice and instructional practice.
